Ex-Ilva steelworks: layoffs suspended amid court battle over Taranto plant

The future of the ex-Ilva steelworks in Taranto faces critical uncertainty following a Milan Court of Appeal decision to shut down the plant's hot production area by late October due to health concerns regarding asbestos and emissions. In response, Acciaierie d’Italia and Ilva have filed an appeal with the Court of Cassation to suspend the order.

To mitigate social impact, the Italian government successfully requested a temporary suspension of layoff procedures for 2,500 workers in the industrial supply chain. Business associations Aigi and Aepi have agreed to this suspension, pending the court's final ruling. Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano has proposed establishing a permanent discussion table involving the government, local authorities, companies, and unions to manage the industrial and environmental transition.

The government has also indicated that it may consider public participation in the steelworks, provided a credible and solid industrial plan is presented. The sale process remains active, with a deadline of October 15 for the submission of binding purchase offers. The transition strategy focuses on decarbonization and the implementation of electric arc furnaces and Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) technologies.
