Taranto prepares for 2026 Mediterranean Games
Preparations for the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, are advancing through venue management, logistical planning, and cultural promotion. The event, scheduled from August 20 to September 3, 2026, is expected to host 3,854 athletes from 26 National Olympic Committees across 28 sports.
The Municipality of Taranto has received nine applications for the management of sports facilities built or upgraded for the Games, including the PalaRicciardi, the Giuseppe Valente athletics stadium, and the Torre d’Ayala swimming stadium. Mayor Piero Bitetti emphasized the need to transform these structures into a shared community heritage following the event.
Logistical discussions have also surfaced regarding the Taranto-Grottaglie airport. The association AGE Taranto has called for the airport to be better utilized for the Games, noting its successful handling of international traffic during the 2024 G7 summit.
To promote the event, the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto (MArTA) has launched a bilingual communication campaign featuring ancient Greek artifacts to bridge the connection between historical athletic traditions and the upcoming international competition.
