Taranto's ex Ilva steel plant ordered to halt waste management due to lacking financial guarantees

Italy's Ministry of the Environment has issued an official notice to the extraordinary administrators of Acciaierie d’Italia, requiring the ex Ilva steel complex in Taranto to suspend waste‑management operations from 20 August until 31 August 2026. The suspension is triggered by the plant’s failure to provide adequate financial guarantees to the provincial authorities for the safe handling of the large volumes of industrial waste it generates.

If the required guarantees are not submitted by the end of August, the Ministry stated the halt will be automatically extended until the company can demonstrate sufficient financial backing. The plant has previously faced similar diffide orders and a civil court injunction in Milan, which is now under review by the Court of Appeal. The ongoing dispute threatens continued waste‑treatment services at one of Italy’s largest steel facilities and could have broader environmental and economic repercussions for the Taranto region.
