Tarapacá authorities plan flood prevention works for Altiplanic winter

Regional authorities in Tarapacá, Chile, have convened a technical committee to address flood risks ahead of the upcoming Altiplanic winter. Led by Regional Presidential Delegate Adriana Tapia Cifuentes and Public Works Seremi Enrique Martínez Arteaga, the meeting focused on evaluating approximately a dozen vulnerable sectors exposed to heavy rainfall and ravine activation.

Technical teams from the Directorate of Hydraulic Works (DOH) and the Regional Planning and Development Division (DIPLAD) reviewed historical water flow patterns to design effective conservation initiatives. Proposed solutions include engineering works such as containment walls and structures to regulate debris flows and runoff, specifically in areas like Alto Molle.

Officials emphasized that implementing these projects will require detailed hydrological studies, hydraulic modeling, and environmental assessments to ensure the viability and design of future infrastructure.
