Tarapacá storm recovery and flood prevention
Overview
Following severe storms in August, the Tarapacá region in Chile has been formally included in the National Reconstruction Table. This designation, achieved through parliamentary negotiations, allows the region to collaborate with the Ministries of Finance and Economy, as well as the Inter-American Development Bank, to quantify damages and develop investment plans for housing, road connectivity, and public works in areas including Iquique, Alto Hospicio, and the Tamarugal communes.
In response to ongoing risks, regional authorities have established a technical committee to prepare for the upcoming Altiplanic winter. Led by Regional Presidential Delegate Adriana Tapia Cifuentes and Public Works Seremi Enrique Martínez Arteaga, the committee is evaluating vulnerable sectors to design flood prevention infrastructure. Proposed measures include containment walls and structures to regulate debris flows and runoff in locations such as Alto Molle, contingent upon future hydrological studies and environmental assessments.
