Tarique Rahman addresses UNGA on Bangladesh's democratic transition
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman addressed the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, stating that Bangladesh was freed from fascism in 2024. He noted that the nation is now embarking on a democratic path following a period characterized by corruption, money laundering, and enforced disappearances.
To address the damage caused by previous rule, Rahman announced the government is implementing a ‘3-R strategy’ consisting of Recovery, Restoration, and Reconstruction. He highlighted that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) assumed governing responsibilities following a national election in February.
Rahman, delivering his speech in Bangla, is the third member of his family to address the UNGA, following his father, former president Ziaur Rahman, and his mother, former prime minister Khaleda Zia. He emphasized that international conflicts should be resolved through dialogue, diplomacy, and mutual respect.
