Tasia Fortune death investigation continues in Mississippi

Preparations are underway for the burial of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old Black woman found dead hanging from a tree outside an abandoned house in Jackson, Mississippi. Fortune, originally from Kentucky, is expected to be interred at the historic West End Cemetery in Greenville, Kentucky, following a funeral service.

Jackson Police have classified the case as “a death pending investigation.” While the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy last week, the results have not yet been released. Authorities have not indicated whether they suspect foul play.

The death has drawn significant public attention and social media speculation, fueled by Mississippi’s history of racial violence and two other recent hanging cases in the state that were ultimately ruled suicides. Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, has publicly disputed the possibility of suicide, stating, “She did not do this to herself. I know my daughter, and she did not do this to herself.”
