TASMAC employees announce strike as court reviews online alcohol sales

TASMAC employees in Tamil Nadu have announced an indefinite strike starting August 28 following the failure of negotiations with the state government. The Joint Action Committee of trade unions is demanding permanent employment, regular pay scales, and the resolution of service-related issues that have reportedly remained unaddressed for nearly 23 years.

In a separate legal development, the Madras High Court has issued notices to the Tamil Nadu government, TASMAC, and the Director General of Police regarding a public interest litigation. The plea challenges the state's recent decision to launch an online booking portal for alcohol through the TASMAC website. The petitioner argues that online sales contradict constitutional obligations to promote prohibition and could facilitate underage drinking by making enforcement of age restrictions difficult.
