TASMAC liquor shops reopen in Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri district after three‑day employee protest

All 111 state‑run TASMAC liquor outlets in Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu, resumed sales on May 29 after a three‑day shutdown triggered by a protest organized by the Joint Action Committee of TASMAC Employees’ Unions. The unions demanded permanent employment for sales staff and a separate cadre to handle empty bottles with a payment of ₹10 per bottle. Officials offered a 30‑day period to address the demands, and the protest was temporarily suspended. During the closure, consumers traveled to nearby border towns in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka to obtain alcohol. Police protection was arranged for the reopening, and large crowds gathered at noon to purchase liquor.

The agreement was reached after negotiations in front of the TASMAC manager’s office at Pandappalli, and the unions announced the suspension of the strike following assurance that their concerns would be considered.
