Tasmania Police seize record 17kg methamphetamine haul

Tasmania Police have seized 17kg of methamphetamine, a haul believed to be the largest single seizure of the drug in the state’s history. The operation took place near a beach car park close to Burnie following the interception of two vehicles.

The drugs have an estimated street value of $8.5 million. In addition to the methamphetamine, authorities recovered $100,000 in cash allegedly linked to drug trafficking operations in Tasmania.

Two men were taken into custody: a 40-year-old from New South Wales and a 41-year-old from Hobart. Police allege the man from Hobart is a member of an outlaw motorcycle gang. Both individuals have been charged with trafficking a controlled substance and are scheduled to appear at the Devonport Magistrates Court on Monday.

The seizure was the result of a collaborative effort involving the Western Drugs and Firearms Unit, the Special Operations Group, and the Joint Organised Crime Task Force, which includes federal police. Detective Inspector Troy Morrisby described the event as “an outstanding result” that will prevent “catastrophic harm to individuals and the broader community.” Investigations are ongoing as police aim to target the broader criminal networks involved in the importation.
