Tata Chemicals Magadi compliance dispute leads to technical committee formation
Kenya’s Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has ordered the formation of a high-level technical committee to resolve compliance disputes with Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited. The move follows the government's suspension of the company's operations due to regulatory concerns.
The committee will be co-led by the Principal Secretary for Mining and the CEO of Tata Chemicals Magadi. It is tasked with conducting a detailed technical review of several unresolved issues, including mineral beneficiation, in-country value addition, outstanding community benefits, and royalty obligations. Additionally, the group will examine unresolved land matters, the potential for multiple mineral extraction in the area, and outstanding issues involving the Kajiado County Government.
Once the review is complete, the committee will submit a report to the Ministry for further direction. The government stated that the intervention aims to ensure compliance with Kenyan laws while fostering a sustainable framework for mining and investment.
