Kenya-Tata Chemicals Magadi mining dispute
Overview
A dispute between the Kenyan government and Tata Chemicals Magadi Ltd has jeopardized a Sh3.62 billion expansion project aimed at tripling soda ash production. President William Ruto has called for the company to leave Kenya, alleging that the operation has failed to create sufficient local employment or manufacturing infrastructure, with profits primarily flowing to India.
In response to the government’s suspension of the company’s operations, Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has ordered the formation of a high-level technical committee to resolve the compliance dispute. Co-led by the Principal Secretary for Mining and the CEO of Tata Chemicals Magadi, the committee is tasked with reviewing issues including mineral beneficiation, in-country value addition, royalty obligations, community benefits, and land matters. The committee will submit a report to the Ministry to determine further direction regarding the company’s operations and regulatory compliance.
