Tata Motors overtakes Mahindra for second place in India

Tata Motors has reclaimed its position as India’s second-largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, overtaking Mahindra & Mahindra during the first half of fiscal year 2026–27 (April–September 2026).

According to industry reporting, Tata Motors recorded approximately 3.91 lakh passenger vehicle dispatches, representing a year-on-year growth of roughly 42.8%. This resulted in a market share of 14.82%. In contrast, Mahindra & Mahindra recorded 3.58 lakh units, a 20.4% growth rate, which brought its market share down to 13.58%.

Tata’s performance was driven largely by its SUV portfolio, specifically the Punch and Nexon models, with utility vehicle dispatches increasing by approximately 59%. The company’s ability to offer multiple powertrain options has also been cited as a competitive advantage in the evolving market.
