Tata Sons advances semiconductor strategy amid leadership disputes

Tata Sons Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran is advancing a major semiconductor investment strategy despite internal leadership disputes and operational challenges. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy 2026 forum, Chandrasekaran emphasized that the group’s focus on chip manufacturing is a long-term commitment aligned with India’s domestic and global needs, rather than a pursuit of immediate short-term profits.

The conglomerate is directing significant capital toward establishing India’s first major chip-making facility, though Tata Technologies has reportedly faced operational hurdles during construction. The group is part of a broader $120 billion investment phase aimed at high-tech manufacturing.

These strategic moves coincide with escalating governance tensions within the group. Noel Tata, chair of Tata Trusts, has challenged the recent five-year reappointment of Chandrasekaran, labeling the decision illegal based on corporate articles of association. Additionally, Noel Tata has expressed disagreement regarding recent capital allocation decisions, demanding faster financial returns for primary shareholders. Tata Sons has rejected these claims, signaling a potential legal conflict.
