Tata Electronics semiconductor expansion in India
Overview
Tata Electronics is expanding its semiconductor manufacturing and supply chain capabilities in India through various international and domestic partnerships. Initial developments included agreements to manufacture and package Nexperia power control chips at an $11 billion facility in Dholera, Gujarat, and a collaboration with Fujifilm to develop a semiconductor materials ecosystem. Fujifilm plans to invest approximately INR 800 Crores to establish a materials plant in the Dholera Special Investment Region. Additionally, a partnership with L&T Semiconductor Technologies was formed to combine fabless design with packaging and foundry capabilities. Subsequent progress saw Tata Electronics signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Japan-based Sumitomo Chemical to secure essential materials like photoresists and high-purity chemicals for the Dholera Fab. Meanwhile, the company’s OSAT facility in Jagiroad, Assam, has begun trial production runs. This Assam project, representing a Rs 27,000 crore investment, is expected to reach full commercial operations by late 2026 or early 2027, with a projected capacity of 48 million chips daily. Recent developments have solidified the partnership with Nexperia, which now covers wafer fabrication, assembly, and testing. Under this agreement, Nexperia MOSFETs will be produced at the 300mm semiconductor fab under construction in Dholera, while Nexperia’s discrete semiconductor products will be assembled and tested at the Jagiroad facility. The combined investment for these two projects is estimated at $14 billion, targeting the automotive, industrial, energy, and communications sectors. Further expansion includes a signed MoU with Dutch supplier Besi to develop advanced semiconductor packaging capabilities at the Assam site, which is part of a planned $3 billion facility. Additionally, Tata Electronics is working on a major semiconductor fab in Dholera in partnership with PSMC. As of October 2026, Tata Electronics has commenced pilot chip production at its assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Assam. Amidst this expansion, Tata Sons Chairman N.
