Tata Steel subsidies could reach 11 billion euros

Organizations Somo and Milieudefensie claim that the total subsidies for Tata Steel could reach 11 billion euros, more than five times the previously assumed amount. These figures stem from custom agreements made by the former caretaker cabinet regarding costs for CO2 storage, biomethane subsidies, grid tariffs, and steel slag processing.

Critics argue that these funds represent a massive subsidy to the largest polluter in the Netherlands, noting that the company's greening plans rely on liquid gas and may not yield significant climate benefits. Milieudefensie suggests these billions would be better spent on sustainable housing, public transport, and renewable energy. Meanwhile, Tata Steel faces a criminal case regarding the intentional emission of hazardous substances.
