Tata Steel environmental and subsidy controversy

Tata Steel is facing scrutiny regarding its environmental claims and financial support in the Netherlands. The Advertising Code Committee (RCC) ruled that the company misled the public with sustainability advertisements, finding that it failed to substantiate claims of producing “green steel” or “clean” production. The committee rejected the company’s defense that its statements were merely “ambitions,” noting a lack of concrete details regarding CO2 reduction targets and the feasibility of its goals.

In addition to these regulatory findings, organizations Somo and Milieudefensie have claimed that total subsidies for Tata Steel could reach 11 billion euros, significantly higher than previous estimates. These figures involve costs for CO2 storage, biomethane subsidies, and grid tariffs. Critics argue these funds constitute a massive subsidy to a major polluter, suggesting the money would be better utilized for renewable energy and public transport. Concurrently, the company faces a criminal case concerning the intentional emission of hazardous substances.
