Tata Sons faces leadership crisis over N Chandrasekaran reappointment

A leadership dispute has erupted within the Tata Group following a Tata Sons board decision to reappoint N Chandrasekaran as executive chairman for an additional five-year term. The move has been formally challenged by Tata Trusts, the conglomerate's majority shareholder, which holds approximately 66% equity.

Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata voted against the resolution, arguing that the reappointment is “illegal” and a “legal nullity” under the company's Articles of Association. The Trusts contend that the appointment requires the support of a majority of their nominee directors, a requirement they claim was not met. The dispute is further complicated by conflicting views on whether Tata Sons should pursue a public listing, a matter involving regulatory guidance from the Reserve Bank of India.

The boardroom conflict triggered a significant market selloff, with Tata Group stocks losing billions in market value. Notable declines were seen in Tata Chemicals, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, and Tata Steel.
