Köln Tatort: New episode explores prepper scene and murder

The 96th installment of the Cologne-based crime series “Tatort,” titled “Die letzten Menschen von Köln,” is scheduled to air on ARD on September 20, 2026. The episode follows investigators Max Ballauf and Freddy Schenk as they navigate a dark and tense atmosphere involving a murder investigation and a prepper community.

The plot centers on the death of a teacher, Linus Makris, who was found stabbed with a hunting knife in a park. The investigation leads detectives to Elara Schmidtke, the victim's sister, who has become involved with a secretive survivalist group. This group, led by instructor Moritz Zechmann, conducts training workshops in a hidden bunker.

Adding to the tension, the city of Cologne is depicted in a state of emergency due to the discovery and ongoing defusing of a World War II bomb, which has turned parts of the city into a restricted zone. The episode explores themes of survivalism and the psychological tension within the prepper community.
