Tatort Cologne: Release of 96th episode

Overview

The Cologne-based crime series ‘Tatort’ released its 96th episode, ‘Die letzten Menschen von Köln’, on September 20, 2026, on ARD. The installment follows detectives Max Ballauf and Freddy Schenk as they investigate the murder of vocational teacher Linus Makris and the subsequent disappearance of his sister, Elara Schmidtke.

The investigation involves a secretive survivalist or ‘prepper’ community participating in a survival workshop. The setting is further complicated by a state of emergency in Cologne caused by the discovery and defusing of a World War II bomb.

A significant portion of the episode was filmed in a real Cold War-era civil defense bunker located beneath the Kalk Post subway station in Cologne. The facility, designed to protect over 2,000 people from nuclear, biological, or chemical attacks, remains largely in its original state. Actors Katharina Schüttler and Klaus J. Behrendt described the filming conditions in the underground facility as ‘very oppressive, very cold and dark’ due to the lack of natural light.

Upon its release, the episode achieved significant viewership, reaching 7.38 million viewers with a 30.8 percent market share. While the production was recognized for its authentic and atmospheric underground setting, the episode also sparked online debate regarding its portrayal of the prepper subculture.
