Tatra Mountains: TOPR issues avalanche warnings amid rising temperatures
The Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue (TOPR) has issued warnings regarding dangerous conditions in the Tatra Mountains due to a significant temperature rise. On Saturday, temperatures at Kasprowy Wierch are expected to reach up to 12°C, which may trigger spontaneous avalanches from heavy, wet snow, particularly on steep slopes with grassy or rocky terrain.
A first-degree avalanche warning is in effect for areas above 1900 meters above sea level. TOPR advises against hiking above mountain shelters and urges travelers to plan trips cautiously, noting that snow and ice on trails continue to make orientation difficult.
Increased tourist activity during the warm weather has already led to multiple emergencies. TOPR rescuers responded to ten interventions on Saturday, including four helicopter rescues. Notable incidents included a tourist suffering cardiac arrest in the Chochołowska Valley and another requiring evacuation from Rysy due to a psychomotor block.
