Tau protein levels linked to increased depression in aging adults
A study led by Teodora Markova at Brandeis University has identified a link between elevated levels of the tau protein and increased depressive symptoms during the natural aging process. Published in the journal ‘JNeurosci’, the research utilized data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative to examine older adults with and without cognitive deficits.
The findings indicate that the rate of tau accumulation directly influences how quickly depressive symptoms increase in individuals with intact cognitive abilities. In these cognitively healthy participants, high tau levels could predict higher scores on depression assessments. Notably, these specific correlations were not observed in individuals already diagnosed with Alzheimer's or those experiencing mild cognitive impairment.
Researchers suggest that the accumulation of tau may precede and contribute to the rise in depressive symptoms. They propose that monitoring depressive trajectories in elderly populations could serve as a complementary method for assessing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
