Tau protein research in neurodegeneration

Overview

Scientific research has increasingly identified the tau protein as a central factor in neurodegeneration and related psychological symptoms in aging populations.

Initial findings published in the journal Neuron established that the tau protein acts as a direct driver of neurodegeneration. Research from Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco demonstrated that phosphorylated tau can enter mitochondria and disrupt the electron transport chain, triggering reverse electron transport (RET). This mechanism links tau abnormalities to mitochondrial dysfunction.

Subsequent research from Brandeis University, published in ‘JNeurosci’, expanded the understanding of tau’s impact by linking elevated levels of the protein to increased depressive symptoms in aging adults. In cognitively healthy participants, the rate of tau accumulation was found to influence the speed at which depressive symptoms increase. Researchers suggest that monitoring these depressive trajectories may serve as a method for assessing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
