Tauranga Council launches overhaul after fatal Mauao landslide review
The Tauranga City Council has launched an overhaul following a review into a fatal landslide at a Mauao holiday park. The council previously accepted responsibility for failures related to the incident.
Separately, an independent Crown Review has been released regarding the failure of the Moa Point Wastewater Treatment Plant and subsequent flooding in February 2026. Local Government Minister Simon Watts described the event as one of the most significant wastewater infrastructure failures in the Wellington region in recent decades. The review identified systemic weaknesses in governance, accountability, asset management, and risk management rather than a single technical fault.
