Tauranga fatal landslide inquiry

Overview

Following fatal landslides in January 2026 at Mauao Mount Maunganui and Pāpāmoa, the Tauranga City Council initiated an overhaul after a review into the incidents. The council has previously accepted responsibility for failures related to the landslide at a Mauao holiday park.

In September 2026, the New Zealand Government extended the deadline for the official inquiry into the landslides. The final report, originally due in early December, is now expected by 18 February 2027. Minister of Internal Affairs Brooke van Velden stated the extension was requested by Inquiry Chair Sir Mark O’Regan to facilitate a thorough examination of the Davison Review, an external assessment commissioned by the council.

The investigation seeks to determine the causes of the landslides, which resulted in eight deaths, and evaluate whether agencies managed risks appropriately or issued sufficient warnings and evacuations.
