Tax-Free Childcare saves thousands of Scottish families money
Recent data from HM Revenue and Customs reveals that over 37,000 families in Scotland have utilized the Tax-Free Childcare scheme, saving up to £2,000 annually per child. In June, the government contributed more than £55 million in top-ups to these accounts, with families receiving an average of £93 each. The scheme provides a £2 top-up for every £8 deposited by parents for children up to age 11, or up to age 16 for children with disabilities.
Despite these savings, research by the Early Education and Childcare Coalition and the London School of Economics suggests that the current childcare system remains complex. The study found that two in five parents using tax-free childcare are still unable to work additional hours due to costs that exceed their entitlements. Experts suggest that replacing the current web of schemes with a single, simpler model could better incentivize employment and maximize the impact of government investment.
