UK Tax-Free Childcare scheme usage and impact
Overview
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) reports that over 600,000 families have used the Tax-Free Childcare scheme to lower expenses. In June 2026, HMRC reported that 601,620 families received support, with £55.7 million distributed to accounts during that month. The scheme provides a £2 top-up for every £8 deposited by parents for children up to age 11, or up to age 16 for children with disabilities, offering up to £2,000 annually per eligible child or £4,000 for those with disabilities. Funds can be applied to nurseries, childminders, nannies, and holiday clubs.
Despite high usage, research from the Early Education and Childcare Coalition and the London School of Economics indicates the system remains complex. While previous studies found two in five parents were unable to work additional hours due to costs, new polling suggests nearly half of parents using Tax-Free Childcare or Universal Credit report that current policies have not helped them increase working hours or reduce debt. The research highlights ‘cliff edges’ in the system that disincentivize higher earnings because of sudden drops in funding coverage when transitioning between support schemes. Experts continue to suggest that a simpler model might better incentivize employment.
