Taylor Farms linked to cyclospora outbreak in federal lawsuit

A federal lawsuit has been filed in Illinois by a Chicago librarian, Alonso Zaragoza, following a cyclospora outbreak linked to shredded iceberg lettuce. The complaint names Taylor Fresh Foods, Inc. and Taylor Farms California, Inc., alleging that the produce distributed by these companies carried the parasite. Zaragoza reported becoming ill after consuming a meal at a Taco Bell, experiencing symptoms such as fever, dizziness, and dehydration that required emergency medical treatment.

The FDA has linked the outbreak to iceberg lettuce processed at a Taylor Farms facility in central Mexico. Taylor Farms, a major global producer of fresh-cut vegetables that supplies retailers and chains like Walmart, McDonald’s, and Chipotle, has voluntarily suspended iceberg lettuce production from its central Mexican operations while conducting an independent review.

Experts note that the scale of the outbreak highlights vulnerabilities in a consolidated food supply chain, where a single supplier's issues can rapidly affect numerous major food service providers. Taylor Farms has previously been linked to salmonella and E. coli outbreaks.
