Tayrona National Natural Park closes for ecosystem recovery

Tayrona National Natural Park in Colombia is closed to the public from October 19 to November 2, 2026. This two-week closure is part of the ‘Respira Tayrona’ strategy, an agreement between Colombian National Parks and the Arhuaco, Kogui, Wiwa, and Kankuamo indigenous peoples.

The closure serves multiple purposes, including ecosystem recovery, the protection of water sources, and the observance of indigenous spiritual practices. This period coincides with Nabbatashi, a time in the indigenous calendar dedicated to spiritual cleansing and territorial care. During this time, indigenous communities perform traditional practices and ‘pagamentos’.

While tourism is suspended, park rangers and scientists will conduct biological monitoring, habitat restoration, and environmental education. These efforts focus on protecting terrestrial and marine-coastal ecosystems, as well as managing water resources during the rainy season. The park is scheduled to reopen to national and international tourists on November 3.
