Tayrona National Natural Park scheduled closure

Overview

Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona in Colombia is undergoing a scheduled closure from October 19 to November 2, 2026. This period marks the third and final closure of the year and involves the suspension of all land and sea visitor access, as well as all accommodation and camping services.

The closure is the result of an agreement between Parques Nacionales Naturales and four indigenous groups of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta: the Kogui, Wiwa, Arhuaco, and Kankuamo. The hiatus serves both cultural and environmental purposes. For the indigenous communities, it is a time for Nabbat or Nabbatashi, a period dedicated to spiritual ceremonies such as ‘pagamentos’ to maintain the spiritual balance of their territory.

Simultaneously, the ‘Respira Tayrona’ strategy will be implemented to facilitate ecosystem recovery, water source protection, and environmental maintenance. During the closure, park rangers and scientists will engage in biological monitoring, habitat restoration, beach cleaning, and environmental education to protect terrestrial and marine-coastal ecosystems. The park is expected to reopen to the public on November 3.
