Google introduces Motion Assist to reduce motion sickness on Android
Google is rolling out Motion Assist, a new feature for Android 17 designed to reduce motion sickness when using smartphones in moving vehicles. The feature uses the device’s accelerometer and gyroscope to display dynamic visual indicators, such as small dots, along the edges of the screen. These indicators move in synchronization with the vehicle’s motion—shifting left when the car turns right or moving forward during braking—to align visual input with the user’s vestibular sensations.
The rollout is currently focused on Pixel devices, including the Pixel 11 Pro XL, though it is expected to expand to other Android manufacturers. Users can customize the appearance of the indicators, including their color, shape, and transparency, and can set the feature to activate automatically when movement is detected.
Additionally, Google is enhancing the Gemini AI experience across its ecosystem. This includes a major interface update for the Gemini mobile app to improve chat organization and a new “Raise to Talk” gesture for Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Watch9, allowing users to interact with the AI assistant via natural language without pressing buttons.
