Google Android Motion Assist rollout

Overview

Google has begun rolling out ‘Motion Assist’ for Android 17, a feature designed to mitigate motion sickness, or kinetosis, experienced while using smartphones in moving vehicles. The technology utilizes the device’s accelerometer and gyroscope to display dynamic visual indicators, such as moving dots or shapes, along the edges of the screen. These cues synchronize visual input with the vehicle’s motion to address the sensory mismatch between the eyes and the inner ear.

Initial rollout efforts are focused on Pixel devices, including the Pixel 11 Pro XL, with the feature appearing in Google Play services for certain users. Users can access the tool through Settings under ‘Google services’ and ‘Personal & device safety’, or by adding a Quick Settings tile for manual control. The feature allows for customization of visual elements, including color, opacity, and specific shapes such as circles, squares, pentagons, or diamonds. While the feature can be set to activate automatically when a moving vehicle is detected, Google notes that results are not guaranteed.

This development follows a similar implementation by Apple in iOS 18 via ‘Vehicle Motion Cues’. While intended to improve user comfort, the feature is not designed to facilitate safe phone usage for drivers. In its September Android Feature Drop, Google officially included Motion Assist alongside other accessibility tools like ‘Guided Vision’, which uses Gemini Live to provide spoken descriptions of surroundings for the blind and low-vision community.
