Teen Drowns in South Yorkshire Lake During Heatwave

Sixteen‑year‑old Muhammed Secka died after getting into difficulty in the lake at Rother Valley Country Park in South Yorkshire on the bank‑holiday Monday, 25 May 2026. He was unable to swim; his body was recovered early the following morning and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

An inquest was opened by senior coroner Nicola Mundy at Doncaster Coroner’s Court. Coroner’s officer Siobhan Golightly reported that a post‑mortem showed features consistent with drowning. The inquest was adjourned to a later date and no family members attended. Friends and relatives launched an online fundraising campaign in his memory.

Secka’s death is one of at least 15 water‑related fatalities recorded during the recent UK heatwave, including teenagers in Lincoln, West Yorkshire and on Formby beach, prompting emergency services and campaigners to urge young people to avoid open water during extreme heat.
