Tegucigalpa transport leaders propose electronic payment system
Transport sector leader Wilmer Cálix has proposed a modernization project for Tegucigalpa's public transportation, centered on an electronic payment system. The proposal suggests integrating current urban routes with the existing Trans 450 system, allowing passengers to use a single payment mechanism across different routes.
Under this model, the technical fare for transportation could rise to between 22 and 23 lempiras. Currently, users pay 13 lempiras due to a state-funded compensatory bonus. Cálix noted that while the technical cost is higher, any fare adjustments would require negotiations with the central government. The electronic system would distribute revenue among recharge vendors, system operators, and managing banks.
Additionally, Cálix reported that the government owes approximately 180 million lempiras in unpaid compensatory bonuses, representing a three-month debt. While authorities committed to disbursing funds for August, other months remain outstanding.
