Honduran public transportation modernization and fare issues
Overview
In late October 2026, representatives of the mototaxi sector in Honduras proposed increasing urban fares from 20 to 25 lempiras. Marvin Chinchilla, president of the Association of Mototaxis of Honduras, argued that current rates fail to cover rising costs for fuel, petroleum derivatives, and vehicle spare parts. The proposal remains subject to authorization by the Honduran Institute of Land Transport (IHTT).
By early November, transport leader Wilmer Cálix proposed a modernization project for Tegucucigalpa involving an electronic payment system. This system would integrate various urban routes with the Trans 450 system. Under this model, the technical fare could rise to between 22 and 23 lempiras, though current rates are kept at 13 lempiras through a state-funded compensatory bonus. Cálix noted that the government owes approximately 180 million lempiras in unpaid compensatory bonuses, representing a three-month debt.
