Tegucigalpa water rationing depends on reservoir levels
Authorities in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, have announced that reducing water rationing schedules depends on both the Los Laureles and La Concepción reservoirs exceeding 60% capacity. Julio Quiñonez, Director of Risk Management for the Central District Municipal Mayor's Office (AMDC), stated that reaching this threshold in both reservoirs would allow for an evaluation of current distribution schedules, potentially reducing intervals from 12 days to 9 days.
While Los Laureles has recovered from high water risk levels, its capacity is significantly smaller at 9 million cubic meters. In contrast, La Concepción is four times larger with a capacity of 36 million cubic meters and has not shown a comparable recovery rate.
The Municipal Unit of Potable Water and Sanitation (UMAPS) reported that recent rains have allowed for a favorable recovery of the Los Laureles reservoir. As a technical measure, UMAPS will conduct controlled water discharges over the next two days to flush out mud, sediment, and organic matter brought in by the rains. Once technical tests confirm the safety of the inflatable curtains and water quality, the curtains will be raised to maximize storage.
