Tegucigalpa water rationing to continue through May
Residents of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, will face continued water rationing until May to ensure availability during the upcoming seven-month dry season. Julio Quiñonez, coordinator of the Climate Change Adaptation Program for the Municipal District Central (AMDC), confirmed that while distribution schedules might be adjusted based on reservoir levels, strict water usage measures will remain in place.
The La Concepción reservoir is currently at 38% capacity. As this reservoir provides between 50% and 60% of the capital's water consumption, its levels are critical to determining any changes in supply frequency. Authorities noted that the UMAPS team is conducting weekly evaluations to decide if distribution schedules can be modified based on consumption rates and processing capacity.
To improve water security, officials are implementing measures such as the installation of an inflatable dam at Los Laureles and testing a water transfer from the Guacerique basin to the La Concepción treatment plant.
