Tegucigalpa maintains water rationing as reservoir levels recover
Recent rainfall has led to a recovery in water reservoir levels in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, but municipal authorities warn that the water emergency is not yet over. The Unidad Municipal de Agua Potable y Saneamiento (UMAPS) reports that the Los Laureles reservoir has reached approximately 41% capacity, while La Concepción stands at roughly 27%.
Despite the increase, both reservoirs remain in the high water risk category, defined as being between 25% and 50% capacity. Tegucigalpa Mayor Juan Diego Zelaya stated that water rationing will continue until the primary reservoirs reach at least 40% capacity to ensure a sustained recovery and sufficient supply for the upcoming dry season.
To mitigate the crisis, the municipality is implementing contingency measures, including the distribution of water via cisterns, the construction of new wells, and the provision of free water to affected sectors. Authorities have also urged citizens to practice responsible water consumption, emphasizing that “cada gota cuenta” (every drop counts).
