Tehran extends free metro services amid school reopening

Tehran is implementing new public transportation measures to coincide with the start of the academic year and rising traffic volumes. The Tehran City Council has approved the extension of free services for the metro and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines for an additional two months, meaning these services will remain free until the end of October 2025.

To manage the expected 30 percent increase in traffic during the school reopening period, Tehran Traffic Police announced that metro services will begin earlier, shifting from 5:30 AM to 4:30 AM. Authorities noted that educational trips account for approximately 10 percent of annual travel, contributing significantly to congestion.

In response to the seasonal traffic surge, optional remote work has been approved for one day per week between October 1 and October 8. During this specific window, the 20-day quota for free entry into traffic and air pollution reduction zones will not be applicable. Officials stated that the budget deficit caused by free metro services may be offset by fuel savings resulting from reduced private vehicle usage.
