Tehran implements new traffic regulations and mobility initiatives
Tehran officials are implementing new traffic management measures and discussing urban mobility shifts to address congestion and fuel consumption.
Mohsen Hormozi, Deputy for Transport and Traffic at the Tehran Municipality, announced special traffic regulations effective from the beginning of Mehr (late September). To manage traffic during the school reopening period, the use of the 20-day free transit quota within air pollution control zones is prohibited through the end of Mehr. Additionally, freight vehicles, including food and medicine delivery and furniture movers, are banned from operating between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM from September 23 to September 29. New construction projects on major highways that cause congestion will also be suspended during this period.
In a separate discussion regarding long-term urban planning, Yaqub Azade Del, an advisor to the CEO of the Tehran Traffic Organization, highlighted the potential for a “day without consuming gasoline.” He noted that 62 percent of vehicles in Tehran are single-occupant and that approximately 20 percent of the city's 20 million daily trips are shorter than 5 kilometers, suggesting significant opportunities to reduce fuel dependency through alternative transport methods.
