Tehran-North Freeway: Alborz Tunnel construction nears completion

Construction of the Tehran-North Freeway is progressing, with the Alborz Tunnel currently in its final stages. Saeed Shahsavari, CEO of the Tehran-North Freeway Company, reported that approximately 950 meters of tunnel drilling remain, being conducted from both northern and southern fronts. Concurrent work includes tunnel lining, ventilation ceiling installation, and electromechanical facility setup.

To enable the operation of this section, a critical connection between the western Alborz Tunnel and the Chalus Road is being constructed. This project involves a 900-meter bridge and a 2,200-meter path to connect the tunnel's northern entrance to the road. Once completed, travelers from the north can enter the freeway directly toward Tehran, bypassing the Kondovan and Serhang areas.

The Alborz Tunnel and its connection to Chalus Road are expected to be operational by late 2027 or early 2028. The estimated cost to complete this specific section is approximately 15 trillion tomans. While the first phase of the freeway reduced travel distance by 65 kilometers, this second phase is expected to improve safety and reduce travel time by 15 to 20 minutes.
