Tehran's dams show critically low water levels amid ongoing shortage
The latest data from Iran's Water Resources Management Company indicate that Tehran's five supply dams hold a combined 574 million cubic metres of water, far below the 850 million needed for a normal year. Overall reservoir fill is about 30 percent, marking the sixth consecutive year of drought and a 36 percent drop in rainfall.
Amir Kabir reservoir is 92 percent full but contains only 166 million m³, while Lar is at 8 percent (78 m³), Latiyan at 80 percent (61 m³), Mamloo at 15 percent (36 m³) and Taleqan at 57 percent (238 m³) – the latter down 10 percent from the previous year. Experts warn that declining aquifer levels in the Tehran plain and surrounding regions heighten risks of land subsidence and long‑term water insecurity. Authorities stress the need for water‑saving measures, noting that low‑flow fixtures can cut household consumption by up to 30 percent.
