Teixeira, Brazil probes mass poisoning of over 200 dogs and cats

Since early May, the municipality of Teixeira in Brazil's Paraíba state has recorded more than 200 deaths of dogs and cats, with authorities suspecting deliberate poisoning. The municipal environment secretary, Francisco Carlos, confirmed the suspected poisonings and said forensic examinations are underway, though the report remains sealed by the Civil Police. The investigation is being handled by the Paraíba Civil Police, which has not released further details.

In response, residents plan a public protest on Friday, May 8, to demand a thorough investigation and accountability. The demonstration will gather local citizens, animal‑rights groups, and civil‑society representatives, calling for stronger animal‑protection policies and justice for the victims.
