Animal poisoning investigation in Teixeira, Brazil

Overview

Since early May 2026, the municipality of Teixeira in Brazil’s Paraíba state has experienced the deaths of more than 200 dogs and cats. Local authorities suspected deliberate poisoning, prompting forensic examinations and public protests by residents and animal-rights groups demanding accountability.

In response to the deaths, the Civil Police of Paraíba launched an operation named ‘Áfonos’. During this operation, authorities executed five search and seizure warrants against members of a single family suspected of involvement in animal cruelty. Police seized mobile phones for forensic analysis to determine the authorship and dynamics of the deaths, though officials noted that the measures do not imply guilt of the suspects.
