Telangana approves ₹7,360-crore pipeline project for Hyderabad water

The Telangana government has approved a ₹7,360-crore pipeline project to transport water from the Kaleshwaram project to Hyderabad. The initiative aims to meet the city’s increasing drinking water demands and support the beautification of the Musi River. The project involves constructing two major pipelines, each with a capacity of approximately 10 TMC. To finance the infrastructure, the government is considering the creation of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to raise necessary loans. The decision to award the tender to Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) has drawn criticism from political opposition, who noted Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s previous harsh criticisms of the Kaleshwaram project.

Separately, political tensions have risen regarding water rights in the Krishna river basin. Former irrigation minister and BRS leader T. Harish Rao has accused Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of failing to address Andhra Pradesh’s diversion of Krishna river water through the Veligonda project. Rao alleged that these diversions are causing severe water shortages for farmers in Telangana regions such as Palamuru, Rangareddy, and Nalgonda, impacting major projects like Bheema and Kalwakurthy. He further questioned the effectiveness of the Krishna River Management Board in protecting Telangana’s water interests.
