Telangana BRS leader Harish Rao disputes Congress debt figures

BRS deputy floor leader and former minister T Harish Rao said the party’s borrowing during its nine‑and‑a‑half‑year tenure totals Rs 4.17 lakh crore, and accused the Congress‑led state government of fabricating higher debt numbers to divert attention from its performance. He cited documents such as the CAG report, state budget papers, the Congress‑issued white paper and RBI data, claiming the Congress government’s own figures have varied from over Rs 7 lakh crore to Rs 8 lakh crore.

Rao reiterated the claim in an open letter to Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao, rejecting the Congress assertion that it borrowed Rs 1.77 lakh crore between Dec 2023 and June 2026. He pointed to RBI statistics showing the figure at Rs 1.86 lakh crore and warned that the Congress has repeatedly altered debt data for political purposes, urging the minister to examine the evidence and avoid misleading statements on Telangana’s finances.
