Telangana BRS-Congress political clash
Overview
The rivalry between the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and the Congress-led Telangana government has intensified through a series of public accusations. After late-May attacks on a Congress minister over broken housing promises, BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) continued to denounce the administration’s welfare record. In July, BRS MLA T. Harish Rao complained that the Employees Health Scheme had been postponed despite salary deductions and that pay revisions, dearness allowances and pension reforms promised in the Congress manifesto remained unrealised. KTR warned that the government had lost public trust, citing neglect of drought-stricken agriculture and controversial remarks about “shedding blood for water,” and announced a series of public meetings and a youth convention to expose the shortcomings. Congress advisors responded by accusing KTR of misleading unemployed youth, pointing to the unfilled promise of a universal job guarantee and a ₹3,016 monthly unemployment allowance, and highlighting a TSPSC exam paper leak that they said damaged recruitment credibility. The IT and Industries Minister noted that the BRS had not conducted Group-I recruitment since 2011, while the Congress had filled about 600 posts and was pursuing two lakh vacancies, urging KTR to apologise. BRS leaders also renewed criticism of Congress-run welfare schemes: Manne Krishank claimed the promised “Free Indiramma Houses” had become a pay-for-service scheme costing up to ₹6 lakh plus fees, and Harish Rao alleged engineered water scarcity in Warangal by leaving the Devadula lift-irrigation project largely idle. In early August, tensions escalated through personal and legal disputes. Congress demanded a public apology from KTR for calling Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s “Bodhi Bhavan” a “criminal waste,” claiming the remark insulted the ideals of Lord Buddha and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
