Telangana Formation Day sparks political clashes and election pledges
Telangana marked its Formation Day on June 2, 2026, commemorating the 12th anniversary of the state's creation in 2014. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla hoisted the national flag, paid tribute to martyrs and highlighted the region’s cultural heritage. The celebration was attended by leaders of the ruling BRS, Congress, BJP and other parties across the state.
The occasion heightened political tensions. Jana Sena chief and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan announced that his party will contest the next Telangana assembly election, accused the Congress of hypocrisy and faced a police complaint alleging defamatory remarks about late activist Gaddar. BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao defended Telangana’s legacy, criticised Kalyan’s comments and reiterated that the “real OG” of the state is K. C. Reddy. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu defended Kalyan against criticism from Telangana leaders.
The Telangana government also convened an all‑party meeting to define criteria for recognizing movement activists, drawing criticism over the lack of clear eligibility. Additionally, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy ordered pre‑monsoon water‑management actions, emphasizing coordination with upstream states to secure water shares.
Overall, the day combined official commemorations with a series of political confrontations and policy announcements ahead of upcoming state elections.
