India faces water and energy stress amid El Niño impacts
India is facing significant water and energy challenges driven by El Niño. Nationally, the Central Water Commission reports that major reservoirs are 31.42 per cent below their total usable capacity following the monsoon, with southern states experiencing acute shortages.
In Telangana, the state government has issued directives to government offices to conserve electricity due to reduced generation. Authorities are also preparing for potential drinking water shortages as reservoir levels in the Krishna and Godavari basins decline. The government is implementing contingency plans, including the mandatory use of treated wastewater for construction and landscaping in Hyderabad starting November 1.
In Hyderabad, groundwater stress is intensifying, with several urban areas classified as over-exploited or critical. Amidst these systemic issues, a recent accident near the Nagole Metro Station caused a major pipeline leak after a car struck an air valve, resulting in a fatal collision and temporary disruption to the Krishna Phase-2 drinking water supply. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) successfully repaired the damage within five hours.
