Telangana government revises cinema ticket pricing

The Telangana government has issued new orders revising cinema ticket pricing across the state, introducing a new “Special Theatre” category. This category applies to single-screen theatres equipped with advanced features such as 7.1 surround sound, 2K/4K projection, and large-format screens, allowing them to charge rates closer to multiplex standards.

Under the new structure, premium or recliner seats in these Special Theatres can cost up to Rs. 300. For other formats, non-AC single screens range from Rs. 30 to Rs. 70, while AC single screens range from Rs. 50 to Rs. 150. To ensure continued affordability, the government has mandated that every theatre must reserve 25% of its total seating capacity as non-premium seats.

The revision follows requests from the Active Telugu Film Producers Guild (ATFPG) and various production houses for higher ticket caps on big-budget films. The new rules also allow for up to five shows between 8 AM and 1 AM. While the government argues that high-end facilities justify higher prices, some moviegoers in Hyderabad have expressed concerns regarding the potential for increased costs during major film releases.
